Abul Kalam Azad is one of them, who have become successful in the business arena of Oman, one of the safest countries in the Middle East. He is the Managing Director of Al Murjan International Co. LLC, a leading business organization in Oman. He has been awarded the Commercially Important Person (CIP) card by the government of Bangladesh.
After completing his SSC, Abul Kalam Azad was admitted to college but did not pursue his studies due to financial constraints. As a result, he had to look for a livelihood.
Abul Kalam Azad was born in an aristocratic Muslim family in Bahaddarhat of Chattogram. His father Kazi Sheikh Ahmed was a contractor and immigrant. He was in Dubai and Saudi Arabia for ten years from 1976 to 1986. Honest and hardworking Kazi Sheikh Ahmed returned home and got involved in contracting business in his area but could not do very well.
Abul Kalam Azad used to do small business or job at a young age when his father’s financial condition was bad. He was engaged in a job from 1987 to 1988 and for the next 4 years he was involved in furniture business. At one stage, he moved to Oman with a job in December, 1992.
At the beginning, he took a job at a furniture store in Muscat, the capital of Oman. He gradually saved some money and started his own business with two years of experience. It was 1994 when he got the courage to do business from his own experience because he had his own furniture shop in the country as well. He also worked in a furniture shop in Oman.
He noticed that the furniture was imported from Dubai and kept in the showroom and customers bought it from there. The people of Oman use furniture for one time a year and then it is discarded. Seeing all this, he started a hardware and furniture shop. Luck smiled on Abul Kalam Azad. He is a hardworking, honest and cheerful man. Within a short time, the reputation of his company Al Murjan International Co. LLC spread everywhere. He makes profit in business step by step.
His company sells hardware, building materials, electronics, sanitary ware and furniture. In this way, any customer can take everything from one shop. At one stage, Abul Kalam Azad alias AK Azad, Managing Director of Al Murjan International Co. LLC (AMICO) was fortunate enough to become a prominent businessman in Oman.
At present, he has two shops in Dhaka and Chattogram and three more in Oman. Abul Kalam Azad, a Bangladeshi from Oman, sent a large portion of his business income to the country as remittances. He has also received recognition for sending these remittances. The Bangladesh government has given him the status of Non-resident Bangladeshi (NRB) and Commercially Important Person (CIP) card. He now has the opportunity to write CIP (NRB) of Bangladesh on his card.
Abul Kalam Azad has made his homes at Bahaddarhat East Sholoshohor naming after Al Hurjan Palace, Yasin Hajir Bari. He says, Bangladesh is my motherland. I am earning in Oman after leaving this country. If we send remittance to our country, it not only benefits my family but also the country. The image of the country is also enriched. For this, I legally send remittances to the country. The government has also given us respect. I have now become a CIP (NRB). It has made me proud. Responding to a query, business personality CIP Abul Kalam Azad says, education is a big thing in life but working with honesty is bigger than this. I have succeeded in life because I have learned to work hard. Now, I am doing business and hopes to establish an industry in the country in future.
The attitude of foreigners towards Bangladesh has changed. He says, there is no 15-storey building in Oman yet. Earlier, people in the Middle East used to call Bangladesh a poor country. Now, they look at us with respect. Those who have come to Bangladesh say that you have become rich and your country has 30/40 storey buildings.
Abul Kalam Azad says, he imports furniture from China, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand to Oman. Previously, he used to import furniture from Turkey. He has had the opportunity to travel to Hong Kong, Dubai, France, Germany, America, United Kingdom, Canada and Switzerland. Besides Bengali, he can speak English, Arabic, Hindi, Urdu and Chinese.
The wife of Abul Kalam Azad is Nurunnahar Begum Jilu. The happy couple is blessed with two sons. Their eldest son, Mohammad Junaid, is studying Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) at Thomson University. Their youngest son Miraj Asmeen is studying in class seven in an Indian school in Oman.
He says, he could not study on his own but he had a desire to give his children a higher education. I want to find my happiness in them. “We are really proud of Bangladesh”, he said. However, stern actions should be taken to uproot corruption from Bangladesh. Then, we can able to raise our heads higher in the world.
