This talented and popular politician was born to a politically conscious family on November 15, 1960 in the village of Sararchar in Bajitpur, Kishoreganj. He was an 11-year-old boy during the war of liberation. His father Najibur Rahman was an important figure in politics in Kishoreganj who actively participated in the liberation war. In retaliation, the Pakistani army captured his son Sheikh Rahman and imprisoned him. Being a son of a freedom fighter, he was treated cruelly. He was released after independence. His father, freedom fighter Najibur Rahman, was the head of Bangladesh Railway Security Forces.
He arrived in the United States in January 1981 and enrolled at Piedmont Community College in North Carolina. He worked as a dishwasher for $3.35 per hour to pay for his tuition and improve his English. As a Muslim, Sheikh Rahman also had to go through a lot of complications when the Americans were at war with the Iranians at that time. He did not give up and did not break down. Rather he has analyzed the problem and build himself accordingly. He has mastered the American culture which has been helpful in keeping him safe.
After graduating from Piedmont, Sheikh Rahman enrolled at the University of Georgia. He was elected as a student senator there and became the President of the Global Studies Association. After obtaining BBA degree in 1995, he got US citizenship. From a dishwasher, he became manager of a restaurant and corporate executive of Pizza Hut. From there, at one stage he involved himself in the real estate business and till date he continues to do so.
Sheikh Rahman’s brother Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Iqbal contested from Kishoreganj constituency in the 11th National Assembly elections in Bangladesh. His sister Nadia Akhtar was elected 5 times President of Bangladesh Community in Georgia.
When Barack Obama became the Democratic nominee in 2008, Sheikh was heavily inspired by him, and took part in politics. He joined the National Association for the Advanced Colored People (NAACP), the National Action Network, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Democratic Party of Georgia. He also serves as an advisor to the Alliance of South Asian American Labor. He was elected from Gwinnett County, which reportedly has the fastest-rising non-white population in the state. He was elected because of his compassion, love and interest in work. He is always sincere in his support for the betterment of the Asian-American working people. He says, “I will continue my efforts to make overall development of Georgia as well as immigrants in particular.”
He has served as a senate member of the Georgia State Senate Committee on Agriculture and Consumer Affairs for the year 2019-2020, the Government Oversight Committee, as a member of the Urban Affairs Committee, the State Institutions and Properties Committee. He is also a senate candidate in the 2020 election. On June 9 of this year, he was nominated in the preliminary selection.
Sheikh Rahman’s wife is Shamie (nee Afrose) and they are blessed with two children. The couple’s first child is a female child named Rawda and other male child Anzar. Sheikh Rahman is a proud Bangladeshi American who is one of the most successful leaders in the USA mainstream politics.3
