An active member of numerous political and sociocultural groups, Kawser Jamal has established his commitment towards serving his Bangladeshi community, as well as contributing to the betterment of his motherland, Bangladesh.
During his college years, he began to proactively volunteer with flood victims and relief groups in Bangladesh. During one of the worst floods of 1998, Kawser worked with volunteer teams to gather food and essentials and distributed them to remote areas of the country. When Cyclone Sidr hit the country in 2007, Kawser worked with BRAC, the world’s largest NGO, to provide relief to affected families. Through this initiative, more than $250k USD was acquired and distributed via the United Bangladesh Appeal. Under Kawser Jamal’s supervision, these funds were used to help thousands of families throughout the country whose livelihoods were affected by the disaster.
In 2018, Kawser Jamal visited the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazaar, Bangladesh, where he helped provide aid to hundreds of displaced families. Beyond monetary contributions, these relief efforts were centered around empowering some of the most vulnerable and disenfranchised communities in Bangladesh. Working closely with Congressman Ro Khanna from District 17 California, Kawser also authored a bill in congress to bring an end to the plight of Rohingyas refugees fleeing violence in Myanmar.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kawser Jamal founded Food Bank Network Bangladesh. By donating personal funds, business revenue and raising donations through crowdsourcing, Kawser Jamal’s Food Bank Network was able to help thousands of day-laborers (rickshawalas) in Bangladesh affected by the pandemic. Funds were used to help 4500 families with their daily necessities, and at least two weeks’ worth of food.
With over 30 years of nonprofit experience and engagement, Kawser Jamal is currently in the process of founding ‘The Bangladesh Foundation.’ Through this foundation, he aims to increase educational resources, entrepreneurship opportunities, healthcare access and empowerment initiatives throughout Bangladesh. He wholeheartedly hopes that this will propel greater involvement among other non-residentBangladeshis, towards the advancement of Bangladesh.
Kawser Jamal is the President of the Bangladeshi-American Democratic Coalition and an Executive Committee Member of the ‘Bangladeshi-Americans for Political Action.’ Through his involvement in the community and public service spaces, he intends to increase engagement and activism among the Bangladeshi diaspora in the United States.
In addition to his leadership commitments, he has actively supported nonprofit and community initiatives, largely among his Bay Area Bangladeshi community. He has co-sponsored multiple events with the Bay Area Bangladeshi Association (BABA), Agami, Shonar Bangla and a plethora of sports teams, such as BD Royal Cricket Club and Bay Tigers (Cricket).
Kawser hopes his contributions will create a ripple effect in his community, and encourage further action, involvement and representation from future generations of Bangladeshi-Americans, including his own progeny.3
