“I Will Continue My Efforts to Represent the Bangla Literature and Culture in Abroad”

From Pathalia, Jamalpur, a small district town of Bangladesh, to the booming city of Phoenix, Arizona, MD Mahabub Rahim has led and inspired his community throughout his life of service. He is now serving as the Chief of Phoenix Processing Center of the U.S. Census Bureau, one of the two centers in the U.S.A to process the Decennial Census 2020. He was praised by senior leadership, including Asst. Secretary of Commerce Mr. Tom Gilman, for his successful reign. Prior to this, he worked as the Area Manager of Operations in Houston, Regional Survey Manager in Denver, and Regional Recruiting Coordinator of Dallas Regional Census Center and was responsible for recruiting 110,000 employees in 12 Western states.
Growing up, he studied in Jamalpur Zilla School, Jamalpur Govt. Ashek Mahmud College, and the University of Dhaka. He was a cultural activist, a member of DUCSU cultural team and an active theater worker of Kushilob Nattyo Somproday. As a student leader of Dhaka University, he made significant sacrifices in the anti -dictatorship movement in 1990 and left the country in 1992. In the US, he studied in Los Angeles City College and moved again to Phoenix, Arizona and got his MBA from the University of Phoenix, as a working father of two.
Mahabub was raised in a household where politics, culture and religion were valued equally, and shaped his life based on these convictions. He has been an organizer since his childhood; he was the general secretary of Chondodola Khelaghor Ashor when he was only 11 years old, the team leader of Junior Red Cross of Jamalpur Zilla School, and leader of the Youth Red Cross team and a Rover Scout of Ashek Mahmud College. He was the first Youth Chief of Jamalpur Zilla Red Crescent Youth (RCY) and attended a number of International Conferences in Japan, Singapore and India as the youth delegate of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society. He served as the Secretary General of Jamalpur Student Welfare Organization of Dhaka, as well.
In Los Angeles, he was the founding member of Dhaka University Alumni Organization. In Phoenix, he served as the cultural Secretary, General Secretary, and as the president of Bangladesh Association of Phoenix for 12 years. He was the successful Convenor of the 8th North America Bangla Literature and Culture Convention in 2004 and in that same year Mahabub was elected as the Executive Secretary of Federation of Bangladeshi Associations in North America (FOBANA), the largest organization of Bangladeshi Diasporas abroad. He served two terms as the Executive Secretary of this organization and was elected as the Chairperson of FOBANA in 2006. His leadership, neutrality, and unique style of managing conflict gave him the ultimate honor and trust to serve as the Election Commissioner of FOBANA for the last 12 years.
Today, he is also the president of Moitree, a cultural organization of Bangladeshi and Indian diaspora to enhance Bangla literature and culture abroad and successfully organized the 21st Banga Mela 2019 in Phoenix as the Convenor.
For his outstanding leadership and service to the community, he has received a number of awards including “Atish Dipanker Gold Medal” in 2007 as the Cultural Ambassador to Abroad, Lifetime Achievement Award from Bangladesh Association of Phoenix in 2015, and Lifetime Achievement Award from FOBANA in 2019.
Mahabub lives in Mesa, Arizona with his wife Rowshon Rahim, and two daughters Jamila Rahim and Fatima Rahim.
