Mohammad R. Islam Mamun
President & CEO
Over the course of 15 years, Mohammad Rejaul Islam (Mamun) has established himself as a successful hotelier in the United States of America. His portfolio includes brands ranging from Marriott, Radisson, Best Western Plus,Wyndham, and Choice. This impressive lineup of international hotel chains certainly bear testament to the stellar achievement ofthis Bangladeshi-born American.
Since his childhood, Mamun has been diligent and ambitious which eventually led him to attain success in almost every challenge that he had taken on. He received his undergraduate degree from Bangladesh’s top engineering university, BUET. Later in 1996, he went to the USA to pursue his master’s degree in Software Engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno. Mamunfirmly believes in the transformative power of politics and has been an activist since his college days. During his time in BUET, he became the General Secretary of Bangladesh Chatro League (BCL) and played a pivotal role in the free and fair election movement of 1990. Mamun stills keeps in touch with his companions from those years. Today, in his new home, Salt Lake City, Utah, he is a keen supporter of the local Democratic Party and closely works with the City Government.
Mamun worked as a successful Software Engineer in several leading firms across the United States after finishing his Master’s degree and rose through the ranksrapidly. However, his ambitious and entrepreneurial nature eventuallyled him to the hospitality business even while maintaining a full-time job elsewhere. The idea of entrepreneurship and his vision to create opportunities for the others had him leave his 9 to 5 job in 2017 as he decided to devote all his hours to building and expanding his venture.
During his time as a hotelier in the early days, Mamun successfully withstood the Global Financial Crisis of 2008. He gathered valuable experience in running a business while working full time which has admittedly been a challenge for him especially during the time of crises. While working as an entrepreneur full time since 2017, Mamun successfully expanded his portfolio of hotelsunder the name of “Assurance Hospitality” vastly and now it is valued over 60 million USD–certainly an enviable feat for any Bangladeshi born American. As a prominent businessmanbased in Salt Lake City, he also served as an Honorary Adviser to the Board of Directors at Zions Bank, one of US’s premier financial services companies.
Mamun has also ventured into other areas of investment where he was able to utilize his skills as an entrepreneur. A software development company that he invested in successfully developed an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system that is now being used by Bangladesh Eye Hospital. He is also one of the first few entrepreneurs to have introduced telemedicine in Bangladesh in collaboration with his close friend and the chairman of JMI Bangla Mr. Jabed Pathan.
Mamun is truly a people person. His deep involvement in the Salt Lake City Bangladeshi community is a prime example of that. With impressive organization skills, he has successfully put together and mentored the local community and Bangladeshi Student Association for several years.
Despite living in the United States for the past 25 years, Mamun still feels deeply about Bangladesh. He makes it a point to visit home and connect with all his loved ones every year. A true patriot at heart, he firmly believes thathe is representing his country through his work and his ideals. Mamun believes that his hard work and relentless pursuit for excellence in service have brought him success, qualities that he thinks are pivotal for today’s Bangladeshi youth to catalyze meaningful changes. In his opinion, Bangladesh has made tremendous amount of progress in recent years and believes that the country will continue to move forward under the current leadership. His hopes that talented and honest young citizens will get involved in politics and bring about a paradigm shift in the arena that has long been tainted with corruption and greed.
