Dr. Rafiq Khan, Ph.D. A Research Scientist/Engineer, Musician, Social/cultural Activist

Dr. Rafiq Khan is an oil and gas related Research Scientist/Engineer working at the Schlumberger Technology Center in Houston, Texas, USA. Dr. Khan is an expert in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling technology that he uses to design, develop and solve complex engineering problems related process equipment. Prior to joining Schlumberger, he worked for ANSYS Inc., largest CFD modeling software company in the world. He received M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Queen’s University (Kingston, Ontario, Canada) and B.A.Sc. in Environmental Chemical Engineering from University of Ottawa (Canada). Over the last 20 years, Dr. Khan has developed and solved hundreds of complex engineering problems, published scientific papers and received several patent awards for this work. Being an environmentally concerned scientist, he plans to dedicate some of his work for the water and air/gas purification technology/equipment that may be needed maintain water and air quality.

Dr. Khan moved migrated to Ottawa, Canada back in 1987 with his mother Rabia Khan. He completed his grade 12 studies (I.Sc.) from Bangladesh and further completed his high-school diploma at Lisgar Collegiate Institute (Ottawa, Canada). He then joining his B.A.Sc. studies in Chemical Engineering at the University of Ottawa and continued his graduate studies ((M.Sc. and Ph.D.) at Queen’s University. He joined ANSYS Inc. in 2001 and acquired expert knowledge in field of Computational Fluid Dynamics. He has been working for Schlumberger in 2007 in Houston, Texas, USA.

Dr. Rafiq Khan is also a trained vocalist classical/semi-classical Bengali music. He first received his training in music from his father (composer/writer) late Mr. M. A. Khan at a tender age of 9. After his demise, Rafiq continued his music journey at Nazrul Academy under the guidance of Ustad Zakir Hussain, Ustad Ful Mohammad, Mr. Ahsan Murshed. He continued learning music ever after moving to Canada/USA from two other Gurus, Mr. Hardeep Buckshi (Ottawa, Canada) and Pt. Suman Ghosh (Houston, TX). Rafiq was greatly inspired by his mother late Rabia Khan for both his academic and music journey.

Dr. Khan is currently serving as the Joint Executive Secretary of Federation of Bangladeshi Associations in North America (FOBANA) and he has been serving FOBANA since 2015. He performed along with his team at several FOBANA Conventions since 1994. Dr. Khan led the cultural team of Bangladesh Association Houston (BAH) for 4 years and successfully helped organizing four fundraising Galas and many mega cultural shows with Sabina Yasmin, Andrew Kishore, SI Tutul, Kanak Chapa, Shubhro Deb, Rummana Sraboni and many more. Dr. Khan founded Jahnkar Music Academy in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in 1988 and taught Bengali music to many Bangladeshi-Canadian kids. He promoted Bangladeshi culture and heritage at different mainstream events like multi-cultural Heritage Day sponsored by Government of Canada, Canada Day events etc. Dr. Khan also introduced Bengali music as one of the credit courses offered by Ottawa Board of Education. He led many local cultural programs promoting local and famous singers of Bangladesh like Sohrab Hossain, Fakir Alamgir. In 2017, he has founded Banga Foundation (Houston, Texas) to promote the language, culture and heritage of Bangladesh and Bengal. Banga Foundation has collaborated with other international organizations for cultural exchange programs.

Dr. Khan is very much passionate about philanthropic activities. He joined USC Canada in 1992 to help needy people both in Canada and Bangladesh. USC has a strong philanthropic program for Bangladesh and partnered. While studying at Queen’s University, he was elected as the President of the Queen’s South Asian Association (QSAA) in 1998 and helped raising fund for the flood victims of Bangladesh, provided social services to the local south Asian community members and many other student related services.
Dr. Khan is married to Selina Khan (M.Pl.) who is working for University of Houston wife. They have one son, Raiyan Khan.
